Asheville, NC: Nine Mile Restaurant
Sometimes the best discoveries require a little work. Like getting off the beaten path and slowing down to enjoy the scenery. When I switched jobs, I had the pleasure of discovering a new section of town, complete with new places to have lunch.
A lunchtime walk through the historic district of Montford in Asheville, NC, revealed the charming delights of Nine Mile. Tucked beside restored houses from 1890s and 1920s, Nine Mile breaks out of the mold with Caribbean-inspired cuisine.
Organic flowers from local growers adorn the tables, the dessert menu showcases the talents of local bakers and daily specials tempt with extraordinary flavor combinations.
But it’s not just these small touches that make the restaurant memorable. It’s the flavor combinations that combine the ordinary with the unusual. The restaurant’s signature dish tosses jerk chicken (or tofu if you’re having a vegetarian kind of day) with fresh ginger, fire-roasted tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, squash and zucchini in a white wine and butter sauce. That savory combination is then served over a bed of linguine with spring onions.
Not looking to stretch your taste buds? No worries, as Nine Mile deliciously bends to accommodate milder palates with simple dishes like linguine with homemade marinara sauce, and (upon request) linguine served with their creamy alfredo sauce.
