Fruit Delivered to Your Door: The Fruit Guys

Fruit delivered fresh to your office or home … that almost sounds too good to be true. But a California-based company called The Fruit Guys does just that. With three distribution centers servicing the East Coast, the Midwest and the West Coast, they have a fast turnaround time and deliver pretty much everywhere — often for free.

When the woman who represents The Fruit Guys contacted me about trying one of their fruit crates, I was all over it. Fruit delivered straight to your home? It sounded like something definitely worth exploring. (Pay no attention to all the mentions of office delivery on the website — although they do that too, the rep assures me that they have launched home delivery in the San Francisco area and will be going nationwide with it next month.)

fruitguys1.jpgThe crate that arrived blew me away - there were apples, oranges, clementines, bananas, kiwis and more. It was literally enough fruit to feed my family of four well for at least a full week (maybe a week and a half). There was even an organic champagne mango thrown into the mix, which I chopped up with kiwi, pear and grapes for an easy fruit salad (full disclosure: the grapes were not from the box).

About half of the fruit was ripe and ready to eat. The other half matured over the next few days, giving the box some longevity. Being able to eat the fruit over the course of a week without the threat of going bad was a really good thing.

Now, the one catch about receiving this is that you need to be there to accept delivery.

If you are interested in where the fruit is coming from before you order, you can check that info out online. I did and I have to admit that I was a little surprised by the amount of fruit from south of the border in my box, however given the time of year and this being New England, it’s not that much of a shock. When the growing season is in full swing, the boxes contain mainly locally grown fruits.

“While The FruitGuys strives to always include as much local fruit as possible, 100% locally grown fruit is not possible during certain seasons. But during the stone-fruit season from late May to September, 90% of the fruit is grown locally, basically everything except bananas. The FruitGuys has always been extremely dedicated to supporting local farmers and local eating, often buying a small farm’s entire crop each season,” says PR rep Allison Perkins of Verse Strategic Communications.

Click here for details on the San Francisco home delivery service. The cost is $24 for 16 pieces and $32 for 25 pieces. Organic fruit and vegetable home delivery will be available nationwide in June.

There is also office delivery available (with a different pricing model).
