Color Your Easter Eggs Naturally

Posted by Cate O’Malley on Growers & Grocers

morguefile.comWhen Easter nearly upon us, thoughts of dying hard-boiled eggs in colorful hues surround us.  But you needn’t resort to those little packages of chemical dyes to do the job; there are simple items from the grocery store that can color your eggs in a green, natural way instead, and the April 2009 issue of Ladies Home Journal shared some great ideas to do so:Add 2 cups water and 2 tablespoons white vinegar to one of the below ingredients:

For orange, use 2 T paprika

For blue, 1-1/2 cups blueberries

For pink, 1 cup chopped fresh beets

For green, 1 cup blueberries and 2 T turmeric

For all dyes, bring dye mixture to a boil, remove from heat and cool and strain liquid into a medium bowl.  Submerge 4-6 hard-cooked eggs in dye for up to 30 minutes, depending on how deep you want the color to be.  Remove from dye and place on a cooling rack to dry and drain.  Store in fridge until ready to use.
