Looks Can Be Deceiving at Tabor Road Tavern

When you drive by a new restaurant, often the outside will tell you what you can expect when you walk inside. A new restaurant opened nearby recently that looked like a fun, rustic sports bar type of place. The kind of place where the kids could go and you could order any assortment of reasonably priced burgers, salads, and wraps. We got quite a surprise once we walked inside.
Some friends invited us out for dinner without the kids, and we all had been thinking about trying out a new restaurant, Tabor Road Tavern. It has a rustic look to it, like an oversized log cabin, from the outside. You wouldn’t know from looking at it that they have an extensive wine selection and that each and every dish served is plated as though it’s a gourmet restaurant.
The inside of this restaurant is warm and welcoming, and we were lucky enough to be seated near a roaring fireplace. We had not one, not two, but three servers during our dinner. They do err on the side of exceptional service with someone stopping by just often enough to ensure that our meal was prepared to our liking and to see if we need our drinks refilled.
We started our meal with Crispy Calamari that happened to be one of the specials that evening. The Calamari was cooked perfectly – not soggy or chewy. We also tried the Shrimp Tempura and the highlight of that appetizer was the Creamy Sweet Chili Sauce. Just the right combination of sweet to offset that hit of spice that gets you right as you finish the bite.
While they do offer some shared plates, we opted to try different dishes for our main course. I had the Seared Tilapia that was served with an extremely flavorful Romesco Sauce. The Char Broiled Hanger Steak was cooked as requested, medium well and medium rare for those who ordered it at our table. The additional highlight with that dish was the potato puree, smooth and creamy. The other dish that was brought to our table was a Roast Pork Loin Wrapped in Proscuitto. The pork was moist and flavorful, with the proscuitto really making it stand out.
Overall, the meal was not only satisfying but above and beyond what we were expecting. The one downfall is that it is rather pricey and is not someplace we’ll return to often, but more for special occasions. They do have a kids menu, but at these prices I’d prefer to take them somewhere that we’ll all be able to relax and enjoy. This is a great place for adults and perhaps older kids who are more likely to appreciate an expensive meal.
