Souper Bowl of Caring - Help to Feed the Hungry
Posted by Michelle Stern on Kids Cuisine.
Four things come to my mind when I think of the Super Bowl: parties, beer, chips and boob-filled commercials. People love to celebrate and eat together while watching the big game. And that means they need to go grocery shopping. Stores know this, so they stock snack foods and party drinks near the front of the store for easy access.
But while thousands of people are snacking away and gazing at fleshy commercials, other people are hungry. Souper Bowl of Caring encourages families to step up and make a difference. It is a giant food drive that is national in scope but local in impact. The food drive works to transform the weekend of the Super Bowl into a time of giving and serving in your community.
In addition to having your children help you select healthy and protein-rich canned foods to donate to your local food pantry from the grocery store, they can also help on a grander scale. National Schools of Caring are schools that have agreed to fight hunger in their local communities by participating in the national Souper Bowl of Caring Movement.
Students, faculty and staff work together to collect money, canned goods and other items. They then donate 100% of the collection to a charity of their choosing. Participation takes place during the weeks of January 18-February 14th, 2009. For more information or to sign up your school, please visit the National Schools of Caring website.
