Winter Wonders: Hot Buttered Rum

Winter Wonders: The Spirit World's Winter 2008 Cocktail Recipe CollectionLike so many things during the holiday season, drinks represent dearly-held traditions. Egg nog, Irish coffee, and hot buttered rum are the three drinks I associate with Christmastime. And when it’s my turn to invite family and friends in for a party or a cozy dinner at this time of year, I serve them my version of hot buttered rum.

To set the mood, I fill my crock pot with apple cider and add a handful of cinnamon sticks, warming it for a couple of hours before my guests arrive. When I welcome my guests at the door, the smell of hot cider greets them, too.

To make hot buttered rum, add 1 1/2 oz dark rum per mug.
Fill with hot cider.

Add a cinnamon stick from the crock pot.
Top with a small pat of butter.

Simple, warm, delicious.
