Bob Tuschman, Senior Vice President of Programming and Production at Food Network announced late last week that food world’s popular bad boy Anthony Bourdain will be returning to the Food Network on Christmas Day, in a manner of speaking.  The cooking channel will be airing four back-to-back episodes of Bourdain’s A Cook’s Tour on December 25th from 9-11 pm.  Once they get viewers caught up with Bourdain’s past antics, the show will move to its new permanent home on Tuesday, January 8th at 10:30 pm.

“Anthony Bourdain is a passionate foodie who has amazing stories to share as he takes viewers on a unique tour of our planet,” said Tuschman.  “We look forward to introducing new viewers to this memorable Food Network series and know they will enjoy Anthony’s unique voice and unforgettable adventures.”

The marathon will feature:

9:00pm     “So Much Vodka So Little Time” — Russia
9:30pm     “Dining with Geishas” — Japan
10:00pm    “How to Be a Carioca” — Brazil
    10:30pm    “Stuffed like a Pig” — France

In the wake of nixing future episodes of Mario Batali’s show Molto Mario, along with not renewing Emeril Live, it seems odd that Food Network would be digging through their archive vault to rehash basically reruns instead of bringing us something new, but perhaps they have something bigger up their sleeve.

That’s the point- they don’t have any new ideas, and the writers strike is affecting new programming too. What would seem fresher, re-runs of Bourdain, who they haven’t had on for a while, or more of Rachael Ray shakin’ it over her Ritz Cracker Surprise?

The writers strike doesn’t affect a network like Food Network, which I doubt has ever been within 1000 yards of a WGA writer. The reason for this more likely is the recent rise in popularity of Bourdain’s “No Reservations” show on Travel Channel. FN sees an opportunity to say, “Hey, we’ve done this too. Watch us!”

Andy - for sure, but given Anthony’s many comments about Food Network and some of its stars, bit surprised they’d welcome him back. Guess any press is good press, right? ;)

Billy - True. Just got word of a new show with the Neelys coming in February.
