Details on The Next Iron Chef America

Iron Chef AmericaPhew, seems like we just made it through the roller coaster that was The Next Food Network Star, but no rest for the weary!  The Food Network has another reality show up its sleeve this Fall: The Next Iron Chef America.

The New York Post recently took a look at the new show, which will premiere on October 7th.  Apparently, the Iron Chefs aren’t quite as iron as we would think, since the Food Network decided that they may need a vacation every now and then.

They have filmed 72 of the one-hour battles in Kitchen Stadium, with 25 episodes being filmed each season.  However, those 25 episodes are all filmed in a month, which is tough on chefs who have their own restaurants, cookbooks, and shows to promote.  To help ease the burden on Mario Batali, Cat Cora, Bobby Flay and Masaharu Morimoto, there will be a fifth chef in the kitchen soon.

Bob Tuschman, the Food Network’s Senior VP of Programming and Production told the Post that: “From a practical point of view, our iron chefs have incredibly busy lives and don’t always have the time to do as many battles as we’d like them to do. We needed to supplement our core.”

The Network is apparently trying to capitalize on the show’s recent success.  It is consistently rated among the top three shows, with an audience that includes large numbers of both men and women.

This contest is much different than the Next Food Network Star though.  They did not make an announcement or solicit entries.  Instead, they “handpicked eight famous or up-and-coming chefs (including New York’s Aaron Sanchez who runs Centrico and Paladar) to be in the game.”  Sanchez also appeared on the Food Network’s Melting Pot

Three judges will decide the winner.

I myself was so inspired that I awoke one morning and this song was the result… (”Sung to the tune of Winter Wonderland”) Frying pans ring, are you listening? In the kitchen, grease is glistening A wonderful sight, we’re cooking tonight Walking’ into kitchen stadium Gone away is the old chef Here today is the new chef He sings an Italian song as he runs along Walking into kitchen stadium In the isles we can make some ice cream We can get the recipe from Alton Brown He’ll say, are you crazy? We’ll say, No man, But you can call it that when you’re around Later on we’ll desire, A better flame from our fire To face unafraid, the dish that we made Walking into kitchen stadium!

Hello - I wanted to let you know that I was highly disappointed in the choice for the new Iron Chef. John Besh was the clear winner.

I enjoyed watching him cook from the first episode to the last and had him picked to be in the final two from day one. He rose to the challenge each time and never seemed to be disgruntled on the tasks presented. I appreciated his sense of humor and the courtesy he gave to his co-contestants.

During the final episode he rose to the challenge of Iron Chef. Not only did he do 7 dishes, but also took the gauntlet presented by the judges for a dessert. It may not have been to their liking, but I liked his quick thinking and willingness to take a chance. He is a true IRON CHEF. Bobby Flay, Cat Cora, Mario Batali and Masaharu Morimoto have occasionally produced a dish not quite to the judges liking and still won. So I don’t think the judges should have jumped on John Besh for his creativity.

I was also disappointed to see that during the final moments when the judges were writing down the winners name one of the judges clearly looked over at their neighbor before writing down their decision. This was not a fair pick at all.

Sincerely, Shelly
