Eat More Salmon

Posted by Cate O’Malley on Fit Fare.

It should come as no surprise that eating fish is good for you. After all, we wrote about the merits of it recently. Having a diet that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids can stave away many things, and one is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a deterioration of the retina that leads to eventual blindness. Although it is more common in people over the age of 55, it certainly doesn’t hurt to eat preventitively in the meantime. Experts say that preventing AMD can be as simple as selecting a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

A recent study from the Archives of Ophthalmology reports that consumption of fish rich in omega-3 can cut the risk of developing AMD by as much as 40%. This, says Riera-Daubon, is just one of many reasons that salmon should be a staple on family menus. “Omega-3 is associated with more than just eye health. It improves memory function, benefits the circulatory system, and contributes to all-around bodily improvement,” says Riera-Daubon. “People of all ages should be including farmed salmon on their weekly menu. After all, it’s never too late or too early to focus on health and it’s easy to see how farmed salmon contributes to a healthy body.”
