Hershey’s Extra Dark Pure Dark Chocolate

This isn’t such a new item on the market, but I’d been reluctant to try the Hershey’s Extra Dark line simply because I couldn’t imagine that it would better than so many other “true” dark chocolates to which I have access. It has been an issue of “so many chocolates, so little time”, more or less. And with so many chocolates, I never have had the time or been willing to blow the precious candy calorie budget on what I assumed would be average chocolate, at best.
Hershey’s, I often say, has a time and a place. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups? Of course. Kisses? Why not? But when Hershey’s puts on airs and tries to compete with the smaller, specialty chocolate companies, honing in on the health benefit hype of dark chocolate and shouting “anti-oxidant” all over their packaging, it’s just annoying.
So, it’s safe to say that I did not enter this tasting from an entirely objective standpoint. It certainly has more depth than a Dark M&M or even a Hershey’s Special Dark. It does seem a bit waxy, however, and fails to melt on my tongue as a proper chocolate should. And I’ve said this several times in previous reviews, but WHAT GIVES with dark chocolate that includes MILK FAT among its ingredients? Why? In my book, once you put milk in your chocolate, it is MILK CHOCOLATE.
Yes, you could do much worse than the Extra Dark Pure Dark Chocolate. But you could so easily do much better – for the same price or less.
It reminds me of the popular kid in high school who jacks off all semester and then shamelessly assumes half the credit for the “group” project done by his studious and diligent lab partner. Not cool, Hershey’s. Totally not cool.
