Great Tips for Healthy Eats
Posted by Sarah Smee on Kids Cuisine.
The Oregonian has a great article this week about fun ways to improve your family’s diet. The tips come from the owner of the awesome looking P.B. & Ellie’s Cafe, a restaurant designed for kids and their families. If you are anywhere near Portland, this restaurant is definitely worth checking out. The food is fun and thoughtful, healthy and often organic, with plenty for kids and parents.
Here are some of Heidi Sivers-Boyce’s ideas for healthy family eating:
- Go to the grocery store as a family. Have kids get involved in checking food labels for nutrition information, and make shopping into a treasure hunt by searching for natural foods of many different colors.
- Make food amusing. Kids are more likely to eat things if they are an interesting color (remember purple ketchup?) or shape. She recommends using berries to die pancakes purple and using cookie cutters to make shapes out of sandwiches.
- Expose kids to new food often. It make take seeing a food 10 times before a kid will try it, and much longer before he or she actually likes it. Keep challenging kids’ palates and they will eventually get interested in the new foods. Of course, this means you should be willing to put something on your child’s plate and not expect him or her to eat it.
