Announcement of the Top 5 Food Blog Nominations

We are finally done, and let me tell you, it wasn’t easy.  So many good nominations this year, we really had our work cut out for us.  Take one out, put one in, too many, not enough, major time zone differences, and all of us coming at it with a different perspective.  But yet, somehow, we made it all work, runs for pints of beer and chocolate notwithstanding.

You can vote for your favorites below.  Polls will close on midnight EST on January 9.

Judges didn’t disqualify their own blogs?

Thank you for your concern, Derrick. As stated when the call for nominations was announced, judges did not vote in categories where their sites were nominated, and were not part of any discussions for that category.

Best Post seems to be empty

Ah, I had forgotten. It’s much nicer than last year, where we all had to pull ourselves out.

There is no post for Best Food Blog - Post.

Hi Cate,
Just wondering why the category for Original Recipes disappeared. Was that an oversight or is there a reason it wasn’t narrowed down to 5 and continuing on?

Anita - populated now (the long urls was an issue). :)

Derrick - thanks, that’s nice to hear.

Paul - see above.

Stephanie - it’s there. :)

Thanks to the judges for all their work. Am I remembering correctly that judges were going to be announced.

Yes, Kalyn, they were announced December 15th.

I’m surprised by the judges choices, not only did they skip some fantastic and well-read blogs (for instance the nominated Chocolateandzucchini, Mattbites, Deliciousdays, Chubbyhubby), but more importantly they did not make their choices according to their own rules. Why did Wellfed’s call for nominations require a minimum of 6 posts for 6 consecutive months for many categories and now announce the top 5 nominations with way less posts? Check “category recipes”, “category writing” and more.

I’m confused….why was Culinary in the Desert omitted from every category? I know I nominated it in a couple categories…photography & recipes. He rec’d more than one nomination, so mine wasn’t the only one. I think it’s a shame that this great blog has been ignored!
Val

Val - Culinary in the Desert wasn’t omitted from every category, it just didn’t make the final cut for the Top 5. It is a very good website, for sure, but sometimes our favorites don’t make it, as with any award activity. It was fierce competition in each and every category, and we definitely had intense debates on quite a few.

Maybe the judges would like to feature some blogs that didn’t make it into the nominations but they liked?

It would be nice if the addresses listed for each blog would function as links. Thanks.

Funny, nobody notified me that my blog was nominated. (I voted for Farmgirl Fare, and would encourage others to do so.)

Also, it would be nice if there were actual LINKS to the posts and blogs you are featuring. Having to copy and paste addresses is so unnecessary.

Thanks.

Thanks Cate, guess I missed it. I can only imagine how much it work it was so thanks again to everyone.

About fifty percent of my votes didn’t register as the “You have previously voted and your vote is not recorded” message kept appearing. This appeared randomly–all for categories that I had not voted for. Other people have had this experience too. I mention this only to make your easy task of hosting this event even easier! :)

Hi: We’re of course incredibly gleeful to be among the finalists. Thanks for handling this big project. Not to add to your workload, but I was wondering — how come all the nominees are not linked up? why the text URLs? It makes it kind of a pain to check out new blogs.

Bonnie - I would have loved to have the URL in the voting panels hyperlinked, but I wasn’t able to find a package that met all our criteria (i.e., one vote per IP), and offered the linking of the URLs.

Thanks for all your work on this, Cate (and the other judges as well). I can only imagine the amount of time and energy it takes!

I’m disheartened that some of my favourite blogs didn’t make it to finals (thankfully Melissa is one of the few that did — go Traveler’s Lunchbox!). I would have thought Matt Bites, which I would easily rank as one of the wittiest food blogs out there and easily one of the best photographed blogs on the web, would have made the finals in more than one category. Perhaps the nomination period need to be better publicized (so that you get more nominations)?

Chubby Hubby - the nomination period was announced on December 11th and lasted for a full week. I posted the notice on all of our sites, and kept it in the top place for the entire week, putting our regular content underneath it.

Additionally, I made a post on Food Blog S’cool to elicit feedback on categories before the announcement went up, and again, after it.

Live links for all the nominees can be found here:

http://clickblogappetit.blogspot.com/2007/01/nominees-are-live-links-for-food-blog.html

Since I was copying and pasting them all anyway, I thought I’d create a post at Blog Appetit to make it easier for everyone to check out all the nominees.

Hi, Just tried to vote for the first time and was told I had voted already!

I agree with Val it is really too bad that Culinary in the Desert didn’t get nominated at all as a Top 5 :( . It was worthy!

I’ve just come back from a long holiday and have checked my links on technorati and found that i was nominated and listed in the top 5 of BFB Recipes. It is such a great honour and thanks to everyone including the judges for noticing my site. I’ve only been blogging for a year and this is a huge accomplishment for me.

This is such a nice news to come back home to…

Thanks everyone!!!

Yeah, I dunno. I only visit a handful of food blogs on a daily basis, and try to stick my neck out and check out new ones when I see them roll along. The skill, talent and finesse these people have and their ability to lay it down so well is mind numbing to me. I don’t think it’s possible to include all of them for nominations and then consider for a winning vote. This is a fun thing to do with a bunch of fun people. And with all awards, some people will get left out, it isn’t personal. I’ll bet Cate is losing sleep and daytime hours with this and should get a large hug and a loud round of Thank You Very Much! She stepped up and was willing to take this on. Bravo Cate !!!

xo, Biggles

Owww. How did I miss this….?

“i think that is an A wing.”-i feel the same

I know I am coming to this party a little late, but I was hoping to find who actually won the awards last year. I cant find it linked anywhere here, nor by searching the wellfed network site, which only turns up expired links to the voting process. Can someone point me towards the list of winners so I can check them out? Thanks!
